Draft Rules on Plastic Waste Recycling
Recently, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, issued draft rules related to plastic waste recycling.
The notification is expected to come into force by December 2021.
Need
- As of 2019, about 660,787.85 tonnes of plastic waste is produced in India annually, of which around 60% is reportedly recycled. Nearly 43% is packaging material and most are single use plastic.
- This is resulting in plastic pollution and related health, economic and environmental hazards.
- It, therefore, necessitates a well-planned policy framework for collection, recycling and disposal of plastic packaging material.
