Legislative Council in West Bengal

Recently, the West Bengal government approved the setting up of a Legislative Council in the state. It was a promise made by the party in its election manifesto.

  • West Bengal’s Legislative Council was abolished 50 years ago (1969) by a coalition government of Left parties.
  • Currently, six states — Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka — have a Legislative Council.

About State Legislative Council

  • The Legislative Council or Vidhan Parishad is the upper house in those states that have a bicameral legislature; the lower house being the State Legislative Assembly.
