Juneteenth

  • Juneteenth is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” and is a holiday that recognizes the day when the United States ended its historic practice of slavery, legally and in the real world. In this sense, Juneteenth is a day for commemorating the “freedom” of all people living in the United States.
  • It is not a federal holiday, but it is recognised as a state holiday in over 45 US states.It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the US and is observed on June 19.
