Uttarakhand Disaster

On 7th February 2021, a massive flood has been reported from Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, where the water level in Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers suddenly rose, following an avalanche near Rishiganga Power Project at Raini village.

  • Some scientists believe that the flood was triggered by a glacial lake outburst in India’s second-highest mountain peak, Nanda Devi, that sent a wall of water gushing downstream with severe force.
  • Glacial Lake Outburst Flooding (GLOF) occurs when a breach in the glacial lake causes an outpour downstream. However, several scientists based on an analysis of satellite images have failed to spot any such lakes.
