ISRO Successfully Tests Semi-Cryogenic Engine Component

  • 10 Mar 2025

In March 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully conducted the Power Head Test Article (PHTA), marking a crucial milestone in the development of its SE2000 semi-cryogenic engine.

  • This test validates the integrated performance of key engine subsystems, bringing ISRO closer to finalizing the semi-cryogenic propulsion system.

Key Points

  • PHTA Test Success: The hot test, lasting 4.5 seconds, was conducted to evaluate critical subsystems, including the gas generator, turbo pumps, pre-burner, and control components.
  • Semi-Cryogenic Engine Development: The SE2000 engine will provide 2,000 kN thrust and use a Liquid Oxygen (LOX)–kerosene combination, offering higher density impulse, improved storability, and cost-effectiveness over traditional cryogenic engines.
  • Advancements in LVM3 Rocket: ISRO is developing a C32 cryogenic upper stage for the Launch Vehicle Mk III (LVM3), increasing payload capacity to 5.1 tonnes in Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) without additional costs.
  • Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV): Designed for Gaganyaan missions, the NGLV will be reusable, capable of carrying 30 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
