On 6th March 2025, the Union government launched AI Kosha, a platform hosting non-personal datasets to support Artificial Intelligence model development.

Key Points

  • AI Kosha & IndiaAI Mission: AI Kosha is part of the IndiaAI Mission, a Rs. 10,370 crore initiative to bolster India’s AI ecosystem.
  • The mission includes seven pillars, such as Compute Capacity, to provide shared access to GPUs for AI startups and academia.
  • Expansion of Compute Capacity: The government has increased the number of GPUs available for shared access from 10,000 to 14,000, with more additions planned every quarter.
  • Diverse Datasets: The platform includes government datasets such as Telangana’s open data, health records, Census 2011, satellite imagery, meteorological data, and pollution data.
  • Homegrown AI Model Effort: Inspired by China’s DeepSeek model, Indian startups are showing growing interest in developing a foundational AI model with government support.
  • Government Open Data Initiatives: AI Kosha builds on previous efforts like data.gov.in, which hosts over 12,000 datasets from various government agencies.
  • Private Data Access Debate: A 2020 committee, led by Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan, recommended compelling private firms to share non-personal data for public use.
