New Telecommunications Interception Rules, 2024

In December, 2024, the Union Government notified the Telecommunications (Procedures and Safeguards for Lawful Interception of Messages) Rules, 2024.
- The new rules replace Rule 419A of the Indian Telegraph Rules, 1951, outlining lawful interception procedures.

- Competent Authorities: Union Home Secretary, State Home Secretaries, or Joint Secretaries (in unavoidable circumstances) can authorize message interception.
- Operational Exceptions: In remote areas or for operational reasons, senior officers at the central or state level can issue interception orders, subject to confirmation within seven days.
- Record Management: Interception records must be destroyed every six months unless required for court or functional needs.
- Non-confirmed Interceptions: Intercepted messages unconfirmed within seven days cannot be used as evidence.
