UGC Drafts Guidelines for Academic Leadership

In October, 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) approved draft guidelines for leadership development in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), inspired by the traditional wisdom of kaal, sthan, and patra (time, context, and actor).

The guidelines are designed to nurture leadership in academic institutions, combining personal and institutional development to ensure effective management of HEIs.
Leadership in HEIs is seen as a blend of artistry and science, requiring mentorship, continuous learning, and a deep understanding of the institution’s unique dynamics.
The guidelines encourage a balance between administrative duties and fostering innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration with industry partners.
Tailored leadership programs that address local and national challenges are recommended, focusing on strategic visioning, skill development, and adaptive leadership.
The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, preparing faculty to embrace new educational models like multidisciplinary approaches and the academic bank of credits.
