Assam Launches Project to Rejuvenate 129 Wetlands

  • 17 Oct 2024

In October, 2024, the Assam government initiated a plan to rejuvenate 129 beels, aiming to mitigate floods and boost fish production across 3,800 hectares.

  • Beels, vital for flood control and groundwater recharge, are crucial for Assam’s environment and fisheries but face challenges from siltation and reduced water levels.
  • The project focuses on dredging, desilting, and constructing water-retaining structures to enhance water storage and fish breeding.
  • Of the 190 initially identified beels, 129 were selected for rejuvenation through a partnership between the Assam government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
  • The Assam State Application Centre (ASSAC) has geo-mapped the beels, with 22 prioritized for immediate action, and contracts set to be signed by February 2025.
  • The Rs 796.88 crore project, with 80% ADB funding, will improve the aquatic ecosystem and flood resilience, benefiting local fisheries.
