National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal

On 9th October 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of a national maritime heritage complex at Lothal, a historic Harappan-era port site in Gujarat.

- Location and Historical Significance: The complex will be situated at Lothal, an important archaeological site known for its ancient port, aiming to enhance the site's cultural and historical relevance.
- Comprehensive Museum Features: The museum will showcase India’s maritime history over the last 4,500 years. Managed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), the project’s master plan is designed by renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, with construction assigned to Tata Projects Ltd.
- Phase One – Initial Developments: The first phase includes a museum with six galleries, focusing on the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
- Phase One – Infrastructure Enhancements: The second part of phase one will introduce eight additional galleries, including a planned lighthouse museum that aims to be the tallest in the world.
- Phase Two – Future Expansion Plans: In the second phase, Coastal States Pavilions will be developed by various states and Union Territories.
- This phase will also feature a maritime-themed eco-resort, museum hotels, a maritime institute, and four theme-based parks focusing on maritime and naval themes, climate change, monuments, and adventure.
