Centre Approves National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds

On 3rd Oct 2024, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) mission with a financial outlay of Rs 10,103 crore.
Key Points
- Objective: The mission aims to boost edible oil production from 12.7 million tonnes to 20.2 million tonnes by 2031.
- Focus Crops: It will enhance production of key oilseed crops such as rapeseed-mustard, groundnut, soybean, sunflower, and sesamum.
- Secondary Sources: The initiative also aims to improve oil extraction efficiency from secondary sources like cottonseed, rice bran, and tree-borne oils.
- Dependency on Imports: India currently imports 58% of its edible oil requirements.
- Reorganised Schemes: The government has consolidated all centrally sponsored agriculture schemes under two umbrella schemes — PM Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and Krishonnati Yojana.
