TAPI Pipeline

  • 13 Sep 2024

In August, 2024, Afghanistan informed that it would begin work on a $10 billion TAPI gas pipeline traversing South Asia.

Key Points

  • The announcement follows the completion of the Turkmenistan section of the pipeline.
  • The TAPI gas pipeline will transport gas produced from the Galkynysh gas field in Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. It will have a diameter of 56in and a working pressure of approximately 10,000 kilopascals (kPa).
  • The pipeline will run through Kandhar and Herat highway in Afghanistan, for a length of 774km. It will cover 826km in Pakistan, across the cities of Quetta and Multan, finally terminating in Fazilka at the Indo-Pakistan border in Punjab region, India.
  • The project is financed by the Asian Development Bank, which is also acting as the transaction advisor.
  • The pipeline is anticipated to deliver natural gas cheaper than liquefied natural gas, ensuring a consistent supply for the recipient countries.
  • The project is expected to benefit the economies of the participating countries and the broader region.
