MHA Forms Team to Assess Wayanad Landslide Damage

On 8th August 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs constituted a nine-member team to evaluate the destruction caused by recent landslides.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a nine-member team to assess the extent of damage caused by the landslides in Wayanad.
- Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed hope that the Prime Minister would approve the Centre’s assistance for the rehabilitation of landslide survivors.
- The state government has requested the Union government to declare the Wayanad landslides as a national disaster to facilitate aid and recovery efforts.
- A total of 225 bodies and 195 body parts have been recovered, while 131 people remain missing; DNA tests are being conducted to confirm identities.
- The state government has identified 91 government quarters for temporary rehabilitation of survivors, with 641 families, totaling 1,942 members, currently in relief camps.
