4th BIMSTEC Security Chief’s Annual Meet, Myanmar

On July 26th, 2024, National Security Advisor NSA Ajit Doval led the Indian delegation to attend the 4th Annual Meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation BIMSTEC Security Chiefs in Naypyitaw, Myanmar.

Key Points

  • NSA met with the Myanmar NSA Admiral Moe Aung and discussed India’s concerns about the security situation in Myanmar.
  • NSA delivered India’s national statement at BIMSTEC meet and spoke about strengthening cooperation in counter-terrorism, combating drug trafficking, arms smuggling and organised crime.
  • BIMSTEC connectivity and holding of second Ports Conclave and water security of Himalayan river systems were also discussed.

BIMSTEC

  • It is a regional organization that was established on 6th June 1997 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration. Initially known as BIST-EC (Bangladesh-India-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation).
  • The organisation is now known as BIMSTEC and comprises seven Member States with the admission of Myanmar on 22nd December 1997, and Bhutan and Nepal in February 2004.
