AIIMS Delhi Launches AI Platform for Early Cancer Detection
- 13 Feb 2024
On 10th February, 2024, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, in partnership with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Pune, has introduced iOncology.ai, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform aimed at detecting breast and ovarian cancer at an early stage.
Key Points
- Deployment and Validation: The technology has been deployed in five district government hospitals, including Mathura and Faridabad, for validation.
- Future plans include expanding its installation in other medical centers with the support of National Information Centers and the Ministry of Information Technology.
- Cancer Statistics in India: India ranks third globally in cancer cases, with over 8 lakh deaths reported in 2022. Late detection remains a significant factor in cancer-related fatalities, with early diagnosis being crucial for improving survival rates.
- Role of AI in Early Diagnosis: AIIMS highlighted the role of AI in reducing false negatives and improving early diagnosis accuracy, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
- Functionality and Learning Models: iOncology.ai incorporates deep learning models capable of analyzing complex medical data, including clinical and radiological/histopathological information. The platform self-learns and improves its outcomes as the volume of data increases.
- Application in Breast and Ovarian Cancer: Given the prevalence of breast and ovarian cancers among women in India, the platform's initial focus is on detecting these cancers early. It has been trained using a dataset comprising half a million images from breast and ovarian cancer cases.
- Success and Future Plans: The platform has been successfully implemented in district hospitals, with plans for further partnerships with cancer hospitals and research centers across India. Its user-friendly design and accuracy have garnered appreciation from cancer experts.
