​Rogue Waves

  • Mathematicians Thomas Breunung and Balakumar Balachandran from the University of Maryland have developed an AI program using data from 172 ocean buoys to forecast rogue waves up to five minutes in advance.
  • Rogue waves are unexpected ocean waves typically at least twice the height of surrounding waves and can appear suddenly and without warning, making them extremely dangerous for ships, coastal structures, and offshore platforms.
