​Origin of Life in the Universe

  • According to modern cosmological theories, our universe was created in the Big Bang about 13.8 billion years ago.
  • At the beginning of the Big Bang, there were equal numbers of neutrons and protons. 220 seconds after the Big Bang, the universe cooled down to 1 billion degrees Kelvin.
  • The protons and neutrons underwent various reactions that produced lighter nuclei – deuterium, helium, and two isotopes of lithium.
  • The Sun and the planets, including our own, formed from the accretion of rocky, dusty, and gaseous material in a protoplanetary disk around the newborn Sun about 4.6 billion years ago.
