India’s First Green Steel Initiative
On 12th July, 2024, a consortium led by the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) announced plans to pilot India’s first green steel manufacturing initiative, utilizing hundred percent hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron (DRI).
- The Ministry of Steel will provide partial support for this project.
What is Green Steel?
- Green steel refers to steel production methods that significantly reduce carbon emissions; or, carbon content compared to conventional methods.
Hydrogen-based Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI)
- This process involves removing oxygen from iron ore using hydrogen instead of carbon-emitting fossil fuels.
