Waterspout

  • A violent storm off the coast of Sicily sank a luxury yacht on 19th August 2024, leading to one confirmed death and six missing persons, with experts suggesting the storm may have been a waterspout.
  • Waterspouts are rotating columns of air and mist over water, often considered weaker than tornadoes, typically lasting up to ten minutes with wind speeds around 100 kilometres per hour.
  • Two types of waterspouts exist: tornadic waterspouts, which form over water or move from land to water and are associated with severe weather; and fair-weather waterspouts, which form in calm conditions and are generally less dangerous.
