Hema Committee Report
On 22nd August 2024, the Kerala High Court directed the state to submit the full Hema Committee report, including confidential sections, while evaluating a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) calling for criminal action against those named in the report.
Background
- The Committee was established in response to the 2017 abduction and assault of a Malayalam film actress, which highlighted issues of discrimination in the film industry.
- The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) petitioned the Chief Minister in May 2017, leading to the formation of the Justice Hema Committee in July 2022 to investigate sexual harassment and gender inequality in the industry.
