​Plateau

A plateau is a flat, elevated landform that rises sharply above the surrounding area on at least one side. Plateaus occur on every continent and take up a third of the Earths land.

  • They are one of the four major landforms, along with mountains, plains, and hills.

Classification of Plateaus

A. On the basis of Mode of Formation

    1. Plateaus formed by Running Water: Many parts of the Deccan of India (Kaimur Plateau, Rewa Plateau, Rohtas Plateau, Bhander Plateau), Brazilian Plateau, etc.
    2. Plateaus formed by Glacial Erosion: Plateau of Greenland and Antarctica, Garhwal Plateau etc.
    3. Plateaus formed by Glacial Deposition: Russian Plateau, Plateau ....
