Sittanavasal Rock-cut Cave

Recently, the Archaeological Survey of India has undertaken conservation measures and also introduced digital checks to track public access in Sittanavasal rock-cut cave, in Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu.

About Sittanavasal

  • Sittanavasal is the name used synonymously for the hamlet and the hillock that houses the following-
    • ­Arivar Koil (temple of Arhats - Jains who conquered their senses)
    • ­Ezhadipattam (a cavern with 17 polished rock beds)
    • ­Megalithic burial sites
    • ­Navachunai tarn (small mountain lake) with a submerged shrine.

Arivar Koil

  • On the western side of the hill, in the northern side, is the celebrated Jaina rock-cut cave temple called, Arivar-koil.
