SC Raises Concerns over Subsidised Food Distribution Schemes

On 19th March 2025, the Supreme Court questioned the effectiveness of subsidized food distribution schemes. The court was hearing petitions seeking ration cards for migrant workers to ensure food security.

Concerns Raised by SC

  • States’ claims of high development rate and per capita income despite having about 70% of their population living below poverty line.
  • The apex court wondered whether the subsidised ration system, meant to provide food security to the deserving poor, was merely a ploy by governments to garner popularity.
