Expert Panel Formed for Great Indian Bustard Protection

On 21st March, 2024, the Supreme Court formed an expert committee to address the endangered Great Indian Bustard's conservation challenges, particularly its collision with power cables, while considering India's renewable energy commitments.

Formation of Expert Committee

  • A three-judge Bench, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, recognized the need to reconsider the blanket directive issued in April 2019 regarding undergrounding power cables.
  • The committee comprises experts from the Wildlife Institute of India and wildlife conservation specialists like Hari Shankar Singh, Niranjan Kumar Vasu, B. Majumdar, and Devesh Ghadvi.
