The first saltwater lantern made in India, Roshni powers LED lighting by using seawater as an electrolyte between two specially made electrodes.

  • It was created by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), and it is hoped that it will make life easier for the less fortunate, especially the fishing community that lives along India's 7500 km long coastline.
  • While any salty water or regular water mixed with common salt may be used to power the lantern, it can also be utilised in hinterlands where saltwater is not accessible.
