The Capripoxvirus, which causes the vector-borne pox disease known as LSD, is a growing concern to livestock globally.
- It has genetic ancestry with the sheeppox and goatpox virus families.
- Cattle and water buffalo are primarily exposed to LSD through vectors like blood-feeding insects.
- Since 2012, the disease has expanded quickly through the Middle East, Southeast Europe, and West and Central Asia. It is endemic in the majority of African nations.
- From Odisha, LSD was first detected in India in 2019.
