Genome Sequencing
Genome Sequencing means deciphering the order of DNA nucleotides or bases in a genome i.e., the order of Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanines (G), and Thymine (T) that make up an organism’s DNA.
Initiatives taken for Genome Sequencing
- IndiGen programme which aims to undertake whole genome sequencing of 1000 Indian individuals representing diverse ethnic groups from India. It is funded by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
- Genome India Project which aims to collect 10000 genetic samples from citizens across India to build a reference genome. It is funded by Department of Biotechnology.
