Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission
NASA's DART mission was a spacecraft built to test a "kinetic impactor" approach for diverting asteroids for planetary defence (in simplest terms means smashing a thing into another thing).
- DART was the first space mission to ever show how an impactor may deflect an asteroid.
- The spacecraft was launched in November 2021 with Dimorphos, a moonlet orbiting the bigger asteroid Didymos, as its target. Dimorphos is a 160-meter-wide asteroid.
- On September 26, 2022, the DART spacecraft successfully crashed with Dimorphos, changing the asteroid's orbit by 33 minutes.
