Breaking the Cycle of Unsustainable Food Systems, Hunger and Debt

On 6th March, 2023, International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) released a report titled –‘Breaking the Cycle of Unsustainable Food Systems, Hunger and Debt’.

Key Highlights

  • At least 21 countries including Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Haiti, Lebanon, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Zimbabwe had faced debt distress and rising hunger in 2022.
  • This occurred even when food prices have decreased after Russia’s war on Ukraine.
  • Global public debt was highest levels in the last 60 years.
  • Countries were forced to choose between repaying debts and feeding people.
  • About 60% of low-income countries and 30% of middle-income countries were considered at high risk ....
