National Commission for Scheduled Tribes
Recently, the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment pointed that the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has been dysfunctional for the last four years and has not delivered a single report to Parliament.
- The pending reports include:
- A study by the Commission of the impact of the Indira Sagar Polavaram Project in Andhra Pradesh on the tribal population; and
- A special report on rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced tribals because of the Rourkela Steel Plant.
Issues Highlighted in the Report
- Manpower and Budgetary Shortage: It expressed dismay over the near paralysis of the Commission's working with manpower and budgetary shortage.
