Centre Amends Prison Manual to Address Caste-based Discrimination
Recently, the Union Home Ministry amended the Model Prison Manual, 2016, and the Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023 to check discrimination and classification of inmates in jails on the basis of their caste.
Key Amendments
- New Section: A new section, 55(A) – Prohibition of Caste-Based Discrimination in Prisons and Correctional Institutions, has been added to the Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023.
- Prohibition of Caste-based Discrimination: Prison authorities are required to ensure that there is no caste-based discrimination or segregation in prisons. All duties and work assignments must be allotted without bias.
