Supreme Court Ruling on POCSO Act

On 7 November, 2024, a bench of the Supreme Court of India ruled that sexual assault cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 cannot be quashed based on compromises as this is not merely a private matter and this has serious implications for society at large.

  • The case revolves around a teacher accused of sexual assault on a minor girl in a school.
  • The Supreme Court set aside the Rajasthan High Court's decision which quashed the 'sexual assault' complaint against a teacher (accused of rubbing the victim's breast).
