Rare Metal Tantalum Discovered in Sutlej River
Recently, researchers from IIT Ropar have identified tantalum, a scarce metal, in the sands of the Sutlej River in Punjab, marking a significant find for both the state and India due to tantalum's extensive use in electronics.
- Tantalum is a rare metal (atomic number 73) recognized for its hardness and exceptional corrosion resistance, making it vital for the electronics and semiconductor industries.
- This metal's unique properties include being ductile, with a resistance to chemical attack below 150°C, and vulnerability only to specific acids, such as hydrofluoric acid.
