Bihar Seeks Special Category Status
On 22nd November, 2023, Bihar cabinet has passed a resolution requesting the Centre for grant of special category status (SCS) to Bihar.
About SCS
- SCS is a classification given by the Centre to assist development of states that face geographical and socio-economic disadvantages.
- The Constitution of India does not include any provision for the categorization of any state in India as a 'special category state.
- It was introduced in 1969 on the recommendations of the Fifth Finance Commission under the chairmanship of Mahavir Tyagi.
- When the Gadgil formula was authorised in 1969, the idea of Special Category Status was first introduced.
