​Dumping of Mine Waste

  • The Central Government has implemented the Mineral Conservation and Development Rules, 2017 (MCDR, 2017) to ensure environmentally friendly dumping of mine waste and minimize negative impacts on the environment and society.
  • Under the MCDR, 2017, miners must store waste material on non-mineralized areas of the mining lease to prevent mixing with valuable minerals and ensure it is placed on impervious ground to protect groundwater from contamination.
  • Waste materials such as rock and overburden must be back-filled into mine excavations to restore the land to its original form as much as possible.
