Combating Desertification: Major Initiatives
Desertification is a process of land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas, often resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities. It involves the transformation of fertile and productive land into arid or desert-like landscapes, where the land loses its ability to support vegetation and agriculture.
India’s Initiatives to Combat Desertification
Command Area Development Programme
- Launched in 1974-75 to enhance irrigation utilization and optimize agricultural production through efficient water management.
- Coordinated by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in collaboration with state governments.
