National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme
On 19th June, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES) to boost forensic investigations and improve conviction rates in criminal cases.
Need for NFIES
- With the enactment (from 1st July 2024) of the new criminal laws (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023) which mandates forensic investigation for offences involving punishment of seven years or more, a significant increase in the workload of forensic science laboratories is expected.
What are the Salient Features of NFIES?
- Time Period: The scheme will be implemented from 2024-25 to 2028-29.
