Need/Rational

  • Trade Disputes: The WTO system, which is the main organisation regulating global commerce, resolves the majority of disputes between states. We have witnessed numerous instances since last year of a WTO panel deciding against India. The US continues to have the ability to reject a number of important World Bank decisions.
  • Lack of Transparency: When multilateral organisations first started out, they were more intergovernmental. Now, these institutions clearly have a strong western influence. The limitations of international cooperation have been made clear by the WHO's lack of transparency and its response to the covid pandemic.
