​Supreme Court’s Directions on Remission Policy for Convicts

On 18th February 2025, the Supreme Court (SC) of India, in a judgment, issued directions to standardize and enhance the transparency of policies concerning permanent remission for convicts in the country.

  • The directives were passed by the bench while hearing a suo motu case of 2021 titled as “Policy Strategy for Grant of Bail”.

What the SC said?

  • The Court referred to its decision in Mohinder Singh vs. State of Punjab (2013), which contemplated an application to be made for grant of permanent remission.
