Measures by Government for Promoting Biofuel
- The National Policy on Biofuels-2018, amended in 2022, identifies various feedstocks for biofuel production.
- Feedstocks include molasses, sugarcane juice, sugar, biomass (grasses, agricultural residues), sugar beet, sweet sorghum, starch-based materials (corn, cassava, rotten potatoes), damaged food grains, industrial waste, algae, non-edible oilseeds, used cooking oil, municipal solid waste, and plastic waste.
- The government has set indicative targets for biodiesel blending in diesel and direct biodiesel sales under the National Policy on Biofuels.
- Guidelines for the sale of biodiesel for blending with high-speed diesel for transportation were notified in 2019.
- GST on biodiesel procurement for blending programs was reduced from 12% to 5%.
