Department of Public Enterprises merged with Finance Ministry

On 6th July, 2021, the government merged the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) with the Finance Ministry to give it a better control over state-owned firms and facilitate its ambitious privatisation programme.

  • Finance Ministry will now have six departments while DPE's hereto parent ministry, the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises will now be called the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

Rationale behind Merger

  • The purpose is to improve efficiency of central public sector enterprises(CPSEs) effective monetisation of their resources that are lying idle.
  • For example, 156 of them have over 4,000 acres of prime land in various parts of the country, ....
