Historic Protests in Cuba

Recently, thousands of Cuban citizens took to the streets for the first time in more than six decades to protest against deteriorating living conditions, lack of basic goods and services, restrictions on rights, scarcity of food and medicines and the increasing numbers of coronavirus infections.

  • The protests, calling for an end to the 62-year-old communist regime, began on July 11, soon spreading to more than 40 cities and towns, including the capital Havana.
  • The anti-government protests are being held at a time when Cuba is facing its worst economic crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union, its former ally.
