Government Drafts a Bill to Strengthen Cigarette & Tobacco Control Law
The government has drafted the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply, and Distribution) Amendment Bill, 2020.
Salient Features of the Bill
- Change in Age of Smoking: Amendment in Section 6 has increased the legal age of smoking to 21 from current 18 years. Also, it prohibits selling, offering or permitting the sale of cigarette in an area within a radius of 100 meters of any educational institution.
- Ban on Sale of Loose Cigarettes: To ban the sale of loose cigarettes it has amended Section 7 which now allows trade and commerce ....
