What Does ‘Sedition’ Mean in Our Time?
Recently, the Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against 10 people, including student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, and Anirban Bhattacharya, in a sedition case for
allegedly raising “anti-national slogans” during an event on
the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in February 2016.
Section 124A (Sedition)
Whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards, the Government established by law in India, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, to which fine may be added, or ....
