COVID-19 Bio-banks

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has notified the establishment of 16 bio-repositories/ bio-banks for collecting, storing and maintaining clinical samples of COVID-19 patients.

  • Specimens collected from COVID-19 positive subjects can serve as a valuable resource for the R&D efforts directed at mitigation of the pandemic through development of vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics.
  • NITI Aayog recently issued guidelines for sharing of bio specimens and data for research related to COVID-19.
  • Of the 16 bio-repositories, 9 will be under ICMR; 4 under Department of Biotechnology (DBT); and 3 under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
