Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019: Dehumanising India's Third Gender

On 26th November 2019, the Rajya Sabha passed the bill on protection of rights of transgenders. The Lok Sabha had passed the Bill on August 5, 2019. It seeks to recognise transgender persons, and confer anti-discriminatory rights and entitlements related to education, employment, health, and welfare measures.

Key Provisions of the Act

  • It defines a transgender person as one whose gender does not match the gender assigned at birth.It includes trans-men and trans-women, persons with intersex variations, gender-queers, and persons with socio-cultural identities, such as kinnar and hijra.Intersex variations is defined to mean a person who at birth shows variation ....
