GI Tag for Kolhapuri Chappals
- On 20th June, 2019, the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) granted Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kolhapuris, the ethnic leather chappal (footwear) to four districts in each state of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
- These leather chappals are hand-crafted and tanned using vegetable dyes making them unique.
- Brand Kolhapuri came into being only in the beginning of 20th century when the footwear began to be traded in Kolhapur. Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj (1874-1922) of Kolhapur encouraged its production and 29 tanning centres were opened during his rule in ....
