Chaukhandi Stupa
- On 10th June, 2019, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) declared ancient Buddhist site Chaukhandi Stupa in Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh) as protected monument of national importance.
About Chaukhandi Stupa
- It was built as a terraced temple during the Gupta period between the 4th and 6th centuries to mark the site where Lord Buddha and his first disciples met traveling from Bodh Gaya to Sarnath.
- The son of Raja Todarmal, Govardhan, gave the present octagonal shape to stupa in order to commemorate the visit of Mughal king, Humayun.
- It was excavated by Alexander Cunningham and Daya Ram Sahni.
