Recently, India has achieved a new milestone in defence exports in Financial Year (FY) 2022-23, with the exports reaching an all-time high of approximately Rs 16,000 crore.
- India's defence exports have increased to Rs 35,000 crore in the financial year 2020-21, a rise of almost Rs 3,000 crore from the previous financial year.
- India is now exporting to over 85 countries, with 100 firms currently exporting defence products.
- Major platforms like the Dornier-228, 155 mm Advanced Towed Artillery Guns (ATAGs), Brahmos Missiles, Akash Missile System, Radars, Simulators, Mine Protected Vehicles, Armoured Vehicles, PINAKA Rockets & Launchers, Ammunitions, Thermal Imagers, Body Armours, besides Systems, Line Replaceable Units, and Parts & components of Avionics and Small Arms are being exported from India.
- The Defence Minister and Prime Minister have praised the record defence exports, calling it a remarkable achievement and a testament to India's talent and enthusiasm towards ‘Make in India.’
- The Indian government has taken several policy initiatives and brought in reforms over the last 5-6 years to support defence exports, such as simplifying export procedures and making them industry-friendly with end-to-end online export authorisation to curtail delays and bring ease of doing business.
- This achievement is an indication of India's potential to become a defence production hub, and the government's efforts towards supporting the same.
