M-CADWM Sub-Scheme

On 9th April 2025, the Union Cabinet approved the Modernization of Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM) as a sub-scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), with an outlay of Rs. 1600 crore for 2025–26.
Key Points
- Objective: Upgrade irrigation networks to ensure water delivery from canals to farm clusters using modern technology.
- Farm-Level Impact: Promotes underground pressurized piped systems up to 1 hectare per farm to encourage micro-irrigation and boost productivity.
- Community Involvement: Empowers Water User Societies (WUS) via Irrigation Management Transfer (IMT), with five years of support to build autonomy and link with FPOs/PACS.
- Youth Focus: Encourages modern irrigation practices to attract youth into farming and create sustainable agri-opportunities.
- Strategic Goal: Part of a broader effort to ensure “more crop per drop” by modernizing India’s irrigation infrastructure.
